This collection comprises an unpublished autobiography (369pp) by Upfield. Entitled 'Beyond the mirage', it details his life up to the time of the Murchison murders in Western Australia in 1932-33. Upfield attained some notoriety when these murders were found to be based on the plot of his novel 'The sands of Windee', published in 1931. Parts of the autobiography were reworked for publication in magazines and newspapers.

Arthur Upfield was an Australian author of crime fiction. His first novel, 'The house of Cain', was published in 1928. He is best known for his series of crime novels, whose main character is a part-Aboriginal detective called Napoleon Bonaparte, usually referred to as 'Bony'. Upfield was the first non-American to become a full member of the Mystery Writers of America.
