Samuel Valentine worked his passage to Australia as a Schoolmaster on the 'Royal Charter' in 1856. It is understood that he worked in the goldfields of Ballarat, before being appointed inspector of the Ballarat Cattle Yards in 1864 and soon-after becoming a Stock and Station agent for Fisken & Gibson.
