Arthur Weetman, a retired forester and forest economist, recalls his 3 years at the Creswick Forestry School starting as a student in 1926; competitive entry examination; studies program, morning classes and afternoons spent gaining practical work experience in the Commission's nurseries or in the forests doing field work; the School's relationship with the local communities; as a cadet forester he felt that there had been little opportunity to implement what had been learnt once on the job as forest management was still in its pioneering stage; his first posting to Bendigo forests in 1928.
Weetman recalls the established practices for culling timber based on a selection system enforced by the Foresters at Trentham; during the Depression years of 1930-1932, government work for the dole schemes such as 3 work camps of 40 men each being sent up from Melbourne to Bruthen & Trentham to be trained by the Foresters to undertake basic timber work for half pay; devastation of the 1939 fires; his transfer to Yarrawonga; the war years and the supervision of forest work undertaken by people confined to the intern camps; his transfer back to Trentham in 1943; the formation of local fire brigades in country towns after the 1944 fires; end of 1951 moving to Head office as Forest Economist where he was able to focus on some of his long held concerns about the economic problems in forestry; his work as a member of the Royalty Equation Committee for the Forestry Commission.
