The collection consists of material relating to the period 1847-1934. There are newspaper and magazine extracts relating to St. Leon's Circus, a card index (approx. 1180 cards) of circuses and circus performers in Australia, contemporary circus advertisements and a program for the Monkey Grotto Charity Circus held in Norwalk, Connecticut, U.S.A., in Oct. 1934. Also included in the collection is The Bandwagon (Journal of the Circus Historical Society of America, 20 issues, 1973-1976), transcripts and notes of recorded and unrecorded interviews, extracts from The Bulletin, correspondence and tape recorded interviews. Also contains a copy of Mark St. Leon's unpublished biography, "The bareback Queen - the story of May Wirth" (Perth, W.A. ; 1997).

The St. Leon family first became involved in circuses in Australia in 1847, at the same time as the Ashtons. They remained a circus family until at least the 1920's. These notes were compiled with the aim of writing a book on the history of the circus in Australia.
