Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697-1782), one of the leading cartographers of the 18th century, and France's royal geographer and cartographer at the end of the reign of Louis XV publishing under the patronage of the Duke of Orleans, brother to the king. He was born in Paris on the 11th of July 1697. Both a geographer and cartographer, he greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography are characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, now regarded as especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such. Compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked relatively empty. He was the publisher of over 200 individual maps, as well as several atlases, including the Atlas General which corrected the errors of the maps of de L'Isle and Sanson. From 1737 onwards he published collections of maps under the title Atlas Generale which went through numerous expanding editions in various languages; English editions were later printed by Robert Sayer, Laurie and Whittle, and others well into the next century. During his whole life he never travelled outside Paris but he built up a vast collection of cartographic material which eventually was passed to the Bibliotheque Nationale. His work is known for its beauty as well as its scientific accuracy.
