A typescript volume containing the 1948 unpublished article "A close view of the trial' discussing Close's trial for obscene libel and his experiences in jail; A "scurrilous doggerel", 'Lumme jailor' presented to Close by Rex Ingamells which satirizes the legal system and Close's trial; Several letters by the Fellowship of Australian Writers, which supported Close during his trial; The big lick' - a film script by Close; Inserted in the volume are three letters between Close and Walter Stone, September-October 1975, relating to Close's autobiography 'Of salt and earth'.

Robert Close has written eight books, mostly novels. He is best known for his 1945 novel Love me, sailor which was banned for obscenity and resulted in the trial and conviction of Close and his publisher. After living abroad for 25 years Close returned to Australia in 1977.
