MS 3942 comprises correspondence between Nettie and Vance Palmer during 1936 and letters to Mrs J. Higgins from her daughter Nettie. The correspondence contains discussion of personal matters, family, friends and work. Other letters include sympathy letters, cards and telegrams on the deaths of Vance and Nettie, correspondence with publishing companies relating to the publishing of Vance's work in Australia and abroad, letters to Nettie relating to her work including comments and criticisms on her book about H. Higgins and the Constitution, letters of Flora Eldershaw relating to her work as a writer and typescript copies of 23 letters from Mary Gilmore to Nettie and Vance Palmer between 1932-1960 discussing family friends and writing.
The collection also contains photographs of the Palmer and Higgins families and a painting. Other miscellaneous material includes a passport, birth certificate, wills, cutting book in memory of Captain M.B. Higgins, notebook of poetry and a folder of H.B. Higgins used at the Federal Convention of 1897. Also, the medal from the Australian Literature Society to Vance Palmer for The passage, 1930. Literary works include typescript drafts of three works by Vance Palmer, a number of Australian poetry and literary magazines, and a collection of books (6 boxes, 1 fol. box).

Edward Vivian (Vance) Palmer was the foremost man of letters of his day in Australia, being a novelist, dramatist, short story writer, poet, critic, biographer, editor and political and social commentator. Janet Gertrude (Nettie) Palmer (née Higgins), wife of Vance, was well-known as a poet, biographer, literary critic, commentator, historian, diarist, letter writer, editor and translator. Vance published in magazines under the pseudonym Rann Daly. Nettie was the daughter of John and Kitty Higgins and a niece of the politician and judge, Henry Bournes Higgins.
