- Biography/History:
-
Anthropologist. John Derek Freeman's work centred on the Pacific and Iban people of Sarawak. Freeman began his study of the Iban in 1949 and in 1955 published what is regarded as one of the classic monographs in social anthropology, Report on the Iban of Sarawak. He joined the Research School of Pacific Studies at the Australian National University in February 1955 and spent the rest of his career, until his retirement as professor and head of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology in 1982, at that university. During the 1960s Freeman undertook research which led to his refutation of Margaret Mead's earlier work in Samoa. Freeman developed his ideas through the 1970s and in 1983 he published Margaret Mead and Samoa: the making and unmaking of an anthropological myth. During the 1970s Freeman also was involved with Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley and was an advocate of Aboriginal rights.
