Youd, world champion woodchopper, axeman and contract timber cutter, speaks of his early years on a 20 acres family property near Deloraine (Tas.); leaving school in 1941 at 14 years of age to work with his father in the bush cutting pulpwood for the new pulp and paper mill at Burnie, then owned by Associated Pulp & Paper Mills. Youd speaks winning his first woodchop championship at Irishtown (Tas.) in 1949; winning his first World championship at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1956 at 29 years of age, about his cutting technique; a wood cutting accident in 1969 which almost killed him; about how entered the Royal Easter Show wood chopping competition again the following year and won. By 1977 Youd had won 21 world championships in Sydney, including 15 tree felling titles, 11 in consecutive years.
Youd speaks of life as a contract timber cutter, a job he started in 1954 working in the Florentine Valley, known as "The Land of the Giants" (Eucalypts) and for its quality timber. He uses the more common name of swamp gums to describe trees he cut, most reaching heights of over 200 feet. It wasn't till 1958 that the chainsaw was used, resulting in a dramatic increase in output and income.
