Bob Noakes, a retired farmer, born in England talks about his family background; his early days and education; arriving in Australia in 1925; the reasons for coming to Australia; the voyage out by steamship and the conditions on board; his ambitions to go on the land; his first job on a banana plantation; jackerooing in the west of NSW; his experiences in the Gilgandra district; being keen on Australian poetry; the rates of pay and accommodation; the Depression; swagmen; the outbreak of World War 2 (1939); being one of the first to enlist and his training at Greta, NSW; patriotism; his training experiences; being assigned to the 2nd First Infantry Battalion; his leave experiences; his feelings about going to war; his troopship experiences; the Suez (Port Said) landing; the standard of training and living conditions.
Noakes speaks about the experience of his first battle; the Italian 'blackshirts'; Italian prisoners; German soldiers; the Australian officers and their abilities; the relationships between British and Australian soldiers; his war experiences in Crete; the partisan support; his description of his capture (1940); being taken to Germany by train; the treatment by the guards; the desire to escape and trials after escape attempts; the POW camps; working in labour camps and the discipline; the larger concentration camps and occupants; recreation in the camp; the meals in camp; spending over 4 years in POW camps; the attitudes of the guards and their treatment of POW's; his return to Australia; his physical condition on return; the treatment by the government; share farming.
