Folkloric Recording. Alf Buffon, a retired brickmaker, born 1924, in Venice area (Italy), recalls his father arriving in Australia in 1927. He speaks about his father arriving in Port Adelaide, working as a brickmaker and living at Merbein, S. Aust. (1928); the Depression years; general information about Italians migrating in 1926 and settling in Griffith, N.S.W.; migrating to Australia in 1932 with the rest of the family; arriving in Melbourne and travelling by train to Adelaide; his early school years; story about German and Italian children; his father buying the Brickworks at Wentworth, N.S.W. (1935). He comments on how brick making was a skill handed down to the next generation, with his sons now continuing in the business; techniques used in the days before the introduction of computerized kilns. Buffon recalls memories of the Parkes Brickworks (N.S.W.)
Buffon recalls the riverboats and paddle steamers in use up until pre-WWII; how paddle steamers for passengers and cargo opened up the country; the route used by the Darling River paddle steamers; the development of Wentworth, N.S.W. and the work his father did with the paddle steamers transporting logs; the mixing of Italian traditions with that of Australian ones.
