- Summary:
-
In this monograph Australia is portrayed as the 'Land of Wallabies', being more a travel destination for Hong Kong Chinese than a destination for migration.Australians are depicted as easy-going. The writer suggests that many Australians are lazy, because they only work five days per week. He discusses Australia's convict past, strong British influences and the abundance of sheep and wallabies. He then outlines Australian Indigenous history and current relationships with 'white' Australians. Then, the history of Overseas Chinese in Australia is outlined with emphasis on a fear of 'Asianisation' among some Australians. Overseas students are regarded as a major income-source, and the writer argues that Australians do not like to study. This is not due to their laziness, but due to the bad job-market and fears of the future. The writer touches on subjects like AIDS and condoms., Bondi, Kings Cross and its Sex shops, as well as drug and alcohol abuse. This is a very exhaustive informative book.
