- After the publication of John Toland's Christianity not mysterious, in 1696, Stillingfleet, in a Vindication of the doctrine of the Trinity, attacked Toland and Locke as common adversaries. Locke replied to Stillingfleet, and in answer to Stillingfleet's rejoinders wrote two other replies in 1697 and 1699.
