Lloyd Ross, historian, trade unionist, writer and biographer, speaks of his childhood particularly his recollections of his father, R.S. Ross, his education at University High School and later University of Melbourne where he took his law degree, how he became a tutor organiser for the Workers Education Association (WEA) in New Zealand from 1926 to 1932, won a Rockefellar Scholarship in 1929 to the University of Manchester and the London School of Economics, on his return to Australia in 1932 he continued with the WEA in Newcastle and Sydney, his growing contacts within the WEA lead to a nomination as Secretary to the NSW Branch of the Australian Railways Union, in 1943 he accepted an appointment as Director of Public Relations in the Dept. of Post War Reconstruction under Ben Chifley and later J.J. Dedman, in 1949 he became a Labour columnist with the Melbourne Herald newspaper, in 1954 he returned as Secretary of the Australian Railway Union until 1969, his association with the Communist Party of Australia and his later split, the industrial groups he associated with, how the historic split in the Australian Labour Party occurred, his activities as a writer on trade unionism, labour economics, and his biographical works on William Lane, John Curtin and R.S. Ross.
