Tony Bomford, retired engineer and former director of National Mapping in Australia (1977-1982), speaks about his career as a mapmaker and surveyor in Britain, Africa, the island of South Georgia and Australia; his English family background; his early years in India, his father, a Brigadier of the Royal Engineers, Director of the Survey of India who went on be Head of Survey for General Slim's 14th Army in Burma; enlisting in the British Army (Aug.1944); being commissioned in the Royal Engineers (Aug.1946); being posted to Germany with the regiment's 1st Field Squadron; attending Survey School (1947), after having been accepted into the Military Survey Corps of the Royal Engineers.
Bomford speaks about his further studies at Pembroke College, Cambridge University (1947-1950); marriage to an Australian girl from Adelaide, S. Aust.; 2 year secondment to Overseas Survey in Tanganyika; first visit to Australia (1954); coming to Australia on 2 years exchange with Australian Army Survey Corps, doing fieldwork in Nth Queensland and the Kimberelys,W.A. (late 1950s); resigning his commission in British Army (July 1961) and joining National Mapping in Australia as senior surveyor; his work as assistant director and director (1977-1982); retirement activities.
