- Summary:
-
"At this stage of the race the runner was 4th last, the winner of the race was 15 mins from the finish line at the Olympic Stadium at Homebush Bay. The Officials had told the small crowd that there were still 4 runners left and on their way. We waited patiently to see all of the runners pass us. To us they were the best in the world despite their position in the race. Then word came around that "she's coming!" I looked and couldn't see her, yet there was an air of excitement with the crowd. I looked down the road and there she [Aguida Amaral, East Timorese] was clapping the hands of any spectator who held out their hand. She was so extremely happy to be HERE and competing in the Olympics. A smile extended from ear to ear. A sense of pride came over us, that this display of joy could be shown in a marathon race here in Sydney. She ran towards me and she tried so hard to clap as many hands as possible. My camera clicked away to capture the moment. In a split second she was in front of me and then gone. I then heard a father next to me say to his child "you've just touched an Olympian"".--Vendor's note.
