Captioned photographs of an expedition to ascertain the pastoral and mineral wealth of north-western Australia'. The party travelled overland from Fremantle to Broome aboard the steamer "Gascoyne". From Broome, the lugger "Mildred" under Captain J.M. Johnson was chartered to sail north as far as Port George Mission. Later, members of the expedition also travelled from Broome to Derby by air and visited Port Hedland, Onslow, Carnarvon, Point Cloates, the whaling station at Norwegian Bay and Mullewa. The expedition comprised: Douglas Stuart Wylie (NZ forester), Edward John Stuart (WA vet and businessman), Bernard Charles Ryder (NZ journalist), William J. Maiden (NZ mineralogist) and Walter H.B. Sully (cinematographer from New South Wales). Following the expedition, illustrated articles by D.S. Wylie and B.C. Ryder were published in the New Zealand and Australian press, and Sully's film "West of Nor' West" was made for Sovereign motion pictures.

D.S. Wylie was born in Hong Kong,and lived in New Zealand, where he founded the firm of Smith Wylie & Co. Ltd. in Auckland. Two other members of the group were from Auckland.
