MS 9274 comprises correspondence, drafts, proofs, scripts, publicity and flyers and digital images. Most of the collection relates to Giese’s books ‘Astronauts, lost souls & dragons’, ‘Beyond Chinatown’ and others on which she has collaborated with writers such as Stanley Hunt, on the first full-scale Chinese-Australian autobiography. There is also material relating to the National Library of Australia’s Post-war Chinese Australians oral history project, including on the Kwong Sue Duk family history video produced by members of the family; other interviews with members of the Yuen, Chin, Fong, Fong On and Tong families; and with community leaders, business and sportspeople, professionals, artists, intellectuals, and politicians. Also included is material on the Hou Wang Temple at Atherton, Queensland, and four certificates issued by the Chinese Nationalist Party (the Kuomintang) relating to Liu Lung (9 boxes, 1 folio item).
The Acc10.132 instalment comprises correspondence and edited typescript drafts relating to Giese’s collaboration with Stanley Hunt (‘From Shekki to Sydney’, Wild Peony, 2009) and with George Sternfeld, a member of the Polish Jewish community, on his autobiography ‘Chocolate to Anzac Biscuits’ (Sydney Jewish Museum, 2009) (2 boxes).
The Acc17.032 instalment comprises documentation focused on multicultural projects, mainly work with Chinese Australian communities, but also with others, and museums and libraries. It consists of articles in ‘The Australian’, ‘The Canberra Times’, ‘Asian Libraries’, ‘New Librarian’, Oral History Association of Australia Journal, ‘Migration’ and ‘Voices’; book chapters such as that in Jan Ryan, ed., ‘Chinese in Australia and New Zealand’; background material on ‘Top End Chinese’, a two-part ABC Radio National series on the Chinese community in the Northern Territory; Chinese Women’s Association of Australia; Australia-China Friendship Society; NT Library Occasional Paper 45; material by Carole Tan; presentations and conference papers such as ‘Active Multicultural Communities’, St George Regional Museum, 2004; and the obituary of Mrs Lilyan Chan (‘The Canberra Times’, 2006) (1 box).

Writer, oral historian and publishing consultant. Diana Giese was born in 1947 and spent her early years in Darwin. She was educated there, in the United States and at the Australian National University. Giese has been employed in the publishing industry in London and Sydney, by Macmillan, Oxford University Press, HarperCollins, Pandanus Books, Brandl & Schlesinger and other companies. As an author, Giese has written several books including Beyond Chinatown: changing perspectives on the top end Chinese experience (1995), Astronauts, lost souls & dragons: voices of today's Chinese Australians (1997), and A better place to live: making the top end a new kind of community (2009).
She has also worked as a literary journalist for major newspapers and ABC Radio, and served on writers' festivals and prize committees. Giese's community and oral history work has involved her with libraries, including the National Library of Australia, archives and museums, and with diverse ethnic communities around Australia. Giese runs her own publishing consultancy, offering project management, editing, oral history, writing and publishing expertise.
