In Under the Act, Willie Thaiday writes about his experience of being removed from Darnley Island (or Erub situated in the Torres Strait) to Palm Island (a Barrier Reef Island 65km north east of Townsville), which was used by the Queensland Government as a settlement for Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander people considered guilty of minor infractions such as been disruptive. He discusses the difficult relationship many Islander and Aboriginal people had with the government officials on Palm Island who controlled every aspect of their day to day lives.
