Access note: This collection includes genealogical and family history information about Ngunnawal and Ngambri people in the region incorporating modern-day Canberra, Yass, Booroowa, Goulburn and Tumut. Much of this information dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is drawn from colonial sources such as Parish Registers of Births Deaths and Marriages, the NSW Register of Births Deaths and Marriages, local histories, and historical society journals. Ann Jackson-Nakano drew on first-hand accounts from local Aboriginal people for some items in this collection, such as her MA thesis and projects with the Yass community. Many of the file titles used by Ann Jackson-Nakano refer to family affinity with Ngunnawal or Ngambri communities; she also formed a view over the period of her research about which group is the Traditional Owners of the Canberra region. The NLA description of these parts of the collection – MS 9154, MS Acc08.116, MS Acc08.145, MS Acc09.153 – focuses on families rather than affinity with any specific Indigenous community. Access to this collection was reviewed and interim conditions assigned in October and November 2023. Ann Jackson-Nakano was concerned to protect her work from misuse but also made all relevant information available to the right people, e.g., those seeking to find family or trace their Aboriginal connection. This, in balance with implementation of the NLA's ICIP Protocol, has informed the approach to assigning interim access conditions. Consultation with people mentioned in the records will confirm the collection's access conditions and the representation of families in the collection, for example, in file titles. Until consultation has occurred, original file titles which identify individuals or families have been replaced by interim file titles, enclosed in square brackets, which indicate the locations in which families were recorded, e.g. [Genealogical information about an Aboriginal man from Tumut]. The names of families and, occasionally, of individuals, are recorded in NLA internal collection information systems. Staff are able to check this information when assisting users to find potentially useful files. Families may be comfortable with restitution of original titles; this will be confirmed at consultation.
MS 9154 comprises a Native Title application and a copy of Ann’s thesis: The Death and Resurrection of the Ngunnawal; a living history (1 sml fol. box).
The Acc99.076 instalment comprises papers from Ann’s time in Japan. This includes published articles, photographs and photograph albums, magazines, booklets, notebooks, research material, drafts, and personal papers (14 boxes + 1 med fol. box + 1 album + 1 packet).
The Acc00.138 instalment comprises papers relating to ‘From the Cradle…a history of the early childhood association’ and legal documents relating to copyright (1 box).
The Acc07.152 instalment comprises correspondence, research material, media clippings and publications relating to Indigenous history and issues. This addition also includes a copy of Jackson-Nakano's book; Ngambri ancestral names: for geographical places and features in the Australian Capital Territory and surrounds (7 boxes).
The Acc08.116 instalment includes correspondence, research material, publications relating to indigenous history and issues, and speeches for Matilda House (6 boxes + 1 packet).
The Acc08.145 instalment comprises research material on Ngunnawal family histories and sources in relation to the Ngambri (Kamberri), Pajong and Wallabalooa communities. There is also correspondence, copies of birth, death and marriage records, articles and notes (3 boxes).

- Biography/History:
-
Journalist and historian, Ann Jackson-Nakano was awarded a Master of Letters from the Australian National University, 1994, for her thesis The death and resurrection of the Ngunnawal: a living history. She spent several years of her early journalism career in Japan writing articles focussing on individuals, especially those with diverse lifestyles or careers. When she returned to Australia after her divorce, she gained interest in indigenous affairs and began studying with communities within the ACT region and surrounds. She was consulted as an expert witness in multiple native title cases and worked closely with indigenous communities to map histories and genealogies of Aboriginal families in the area.
