Murray the Australian escapologist, also known as Murray Walters, born Melbourne, 11 November 1901, stage name of Leo Norman Maurien Murray Stuart Carrington Walters. Learned his craft as escapologist-illusionist from books, his career beginning in 1915. His British debut was at the London Coliseum, 1926 but played in dozens of countries until his forced retirement in 1954 due to illness. He is best known for his sensational escape stunts which he devised. Many regard him as superior to Houdini in this branch of magic and in 1986 was presented with a Masters Fellowship by the Academy of Magical Arts. Died 22 January 1988.
