The collection includes non-English stories, songs and rhymes recorded by Gwenda Davey in 1976, some children's playground rhymes recorded in 1972-1977 by students at the Institute of Early Childhood Development (now School of Early Childhood Studies, University of Melbourne) and some live performances of ethnic music recorded in Melbourne in 1976. The languages used include English, Greek, Spanish and Turkish.

In 1975 the Interim Children's Commission commissioned Gwenda Davey to develop a cassette-based kit of teaching materials for children between 3 and 8 years of age. The kit was to include songs, music, rhymes and stories in 8 languages including English. The Multicultural Cassette Series (published in 1983) and the Australian Children's Folklore Collection consist of selections from the original field recordings.
