- Notes:
- This book was privately published in 1944 by J.M. (Jack) Braga, as a tribute to the author J.P. Braga, his father, who had died on 12 February 1944. Only 12 of 26 planned chapters had been completed. A further six draft chapters and some fragmentary notes are held by the National Library of Australia in the J.M. Braga manuscripts collection (MS 4300). The Library holds 4 copies of this work, 3 of which are unbound. The work was intended to be the basis for a second, completed edition that never eventuated. At the end of the war, Jack gave a copy to his friend Charles R. Boxer on the latter's release from POW camp in Hong Kong for Boxer's comments, which are pencilled throughout. Boxer took strong issue with J.P. Braga's censorious remarks concerning Andrew Ljungstedt's critical assessment of Portuguese influence in the Far East (A. Ljungstedt, An historical sketch of the Portuguese settlements in China, Boston, 1836). Jack Braga then had this copy bound in half leather, prefaced by the original chapter plan in his own handwriting, thus indicating the intended scope of the second edition. This bound copy is at BRA 3064 while the 3 unbound copies are at BRA 2831, 2832 and 2833.
