MS 204 comprises: Journal of a voyage from England to Sydney on the Florentia; Journal of an expedition after some Van Diemen's Aboriginal Australians; Diary covering the years 1831-1841; Diary for years 1843-1845, contains journal of a voyage to England in the ship Thomas Coutts; Diary for years 1846-1847 contains notes on the voyage to India in the ship Ann; Notebook covering 1848-1857; Miscellaneous items include hotel bills, silk play bill, plan of the Florentia and Thomas Coutts and maps of Adelaide.

Born in1819, Samuel Rawson came to Australia in 1838 aboard the Florentia, after trying sheep farming he obtained a commission in the Army in 1839. He went to India with his regiment in 1842.
