Terms of reference: For the purposes of this study the Humanities are taken to encompass all or part of History, Classical Studies, English, European Languages and Literature, Asian Studies, Philosophy and Religion, The Arts, Linguistics, Philology, Prehistory and Archaeology. It should be noted that a number of these fields (in particular, History, Philosophy and Asian Studies) are substantially represented in the Social Sciences as well, and the respective Academies will maintain close links about these fields in their Strategic Reviews (since a parallel Review of the Social Sciences is also being undertaken). The study will focus principally on research and research training in the Humanities in the Universities, but some reference will be made to work conducted within other agencies, private institutions, and by individuals.
