- Summary:
-
Profiling of individuals using personal information is a technique which has been in use for a number of years. However, it is only in recent years that, with the aid of technology, profiling has become a common tool which is used for a range of applications in both the public and private sectors. In the public sector profiling is used for the detection of money laundering, customs barrier control at entry points to Australia, criminal intelligence, crime prevention and the detection of overpayments and fraud control. In the private sector profiling is used for direct marketing, credit scoring and fraud control. Despite its widespread use, there is little published information about profiling. This paper represents an initial attempt to fill that gap.
