- Biography/History:
-
Journalist, writer and socialist. Edwin James Brady was born at Carcoar, New South Wales in 1869. He was educated in the United States where the Brady family lived briefly, and in Sydney after their return to Australia in 1882. Following the shipping strike of 1890 Brady joined the Labor Electoral League and became editor of its journal, The Australian workman. His first book of verse, The ways of many waters, was published in 1899, establishing him as an authentic writer of ballads and sea shanties. He edited The grip in Grafton from 1901-1903 and, in 1904, became editor of the Labor newspaper, The worker. Between 1902 and 1944 he published a number of books of verse and prose, including Australia unlimited (1918). From 1914 until his death Brady lived at Mallacoota in Victoria.
