Letter from Lady Elgin, Windsor, dated 21 Dec. 1793 to Henry Dundas forwarding a letter received by her daughter from a London shopkeeper, D. Hay, concerning a possible petition to the King seeking a mitigation of the sentence passed on Thomas Muir (1 p.) ; letter from D. Hay to Lady Charlotte Bruce, undated, reporting his meeting with Thomas Muir on the hulk, Muir's lack of remorse and belief in his innocence, and visits by Lord Lauderdale, R.B. Sheridan and others (2 p.).

Martha Whyte married Charles Bruce (1732-1771), 5th Earl of Elgin, in 1759. Thomas Muir, one of the Scottish Martyrs, was convicted of sedition in August 1793 and transported to New South Wales in 1794.
