Abstract: This program aims to increase awareness of the games-centred approach to coaching and teaching and demonstrates how coaches can use this approach. The games-centred approach, which incorporates poroblem solving and decision making by the athletes, is described and contrasted with the technique-centred approach. Examples of coaches using the two approaches is shown, and coaches from a number of sports discuss the benefits of games-centred approach. Rod Thorpe, a physical education specialist from Loughborough University advises on when to focus on technique and explains how to shift the emphasis from techniques to total performance in a game situation. The program features demonstrations of simple games which contain concepts applicable to many sports and suggests how to design questions and challenges suited to a particular sport.
