The papers mainly comprise research papers and notes for Gibson's postgraduate studies. Gibson's research interests were centred on education in Papua New Guinea and the ideals that motivated schooling there, including the role played by Christian missions. He wrote his doctoral thesis in 1984 on the educational ideals of William Charles Groves, an Australian anthropologist who was the Foundation Director of Education in Papua New Guinea from 1946-1958. Other papers include general correspondence, a diary (1946) and the letters and diary of Joan Gibson, 1949-1950.
- Biography/History:

Teacher. Gibson was born in Cranbourne, Victoria. He first went to Papua New Guinea in 1943 with the 4th Field Ambulance. On discharge from the army, in 1946 he joined the newly formed Papua New Guinea Education Department. After training at Sogeri near Port Moresby, in 1947 he became the District Education Officer at Kavieng, the administrative centre of the New Ireland district. He taught there from 1947-1950 before returning to the Victorian Education Department. He was one of the pioneer teachers in Papua New Guinea.
