The collection is mainly comprised of the papers of Leopold Fane De Salis (1816-1898), George Fane De Salis (1851-1931) and George's wife Mary Fane De Salis (nee Smith). Also includes papers of Charlotte and Emily De Salis and Nina and William Farrer. The papers comprise conveyance documents, bankbooks, political papers, correspondence, photographs, press cuttings, post cards and greeting cards, and unpublished books. Major correspondents include Rev. and Mrs Pierce Galliard-Smith, Emily Smith, Paulus Smith, Gertrude Smith, Henry Parkes and George Hamilton. An Aboriginal wooden shield forming part of this collection has been catalogued separately.

Leopold Fabius Dietegan Fane De Salis (1816-1898) migrated to Australia in 1840. He married Charlotte MacDonald in 1844 and had five children: Leopold William (1845-1930), Rodolph (1847-1876), George Arthur Charles (1851-1931), Henry Gubert (1858-1931) and Nina (1848-1929). Leopold senior acquired large pastoral interests in NSW and Queensland and was a Member of the NSW Legislative Council, 1874-1898.
