The MS 9471 collection documents West's activities as an academic, writer and political commentator. The papers have been arranged into 20 series: general correspondence, Australian National University, Adelaide University, Bedford Park, Independent University, Buckingham, England and Deakin University, Command and Staff College, Queenscliff, Political advancement in the South Pacific, Hubert Murray, Justiciarship in England 1066-1232, Selected letters of Hubert Murray, Gilbert Murray, a life, From Alamein to Scarlet Beach: 2/4 Light A.A. Regiment, 'Testifying the past', 'Notes on the news', research material on Papua New Guinea, cuttings, printed material and papers written by others.
The correspondents in MS 9471 include Arnold Toynbee, F.R. Jevons, Gilbert Murray, Sir John Crawford, Sir Keith Hancock, J.W. Davidson, M.D. Knowles, J.G. Edward, Max Gluckman, John Le Patourel, R.F. Treharne, V.H. Galbraith, Ralph Bulmer, E.J. Venney, G.R. Elton, G. Kitson Clark, Richard Mayne and Hanna Solf. Copies of some of West's letters are included.
The Acc02.266 instalment comprises correspondence, cuttings, notes, drafts and miscellaneous papers, 1971-2002.
The Acc13.169 instalment comprises approximately 200 letters, both sides of correspondence relating to publications, research, people and institutions in Australia and the South Pacific area.

Historian and academic. Francis James West has pursued a long academic career with appointments at the Australian National University as Research Fellow in the Research School of Pacific Studies, 1952-1955, and later as Professorial Fellow in the same School, 1965-1976; University of Adelaide at Bedford Park as Professor of Comparative Government, 1964-1965; University of Buckingham, England, as Pro-Principal, Dean of Arts and Social Studies and Professor of History, 1973-1975; Deakin University as Professor of History and Government, 1976-1980, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), 1986-1990, and as Emeritus Professor since 1990. Since 1994 West has been with Churchill College, Cambridge University. West is the author of numerous articles and books including, Hubert Murray (1962), Biography as history (1973), Gilbert Murray, a life (1984), and, From Alamein to Scarlet Beach: the history of 2/4 Light Anti-aircraft Regiment, Second A.I.F. (1989).
