Each collector's book records name and number of Census District, County and sub-district (borough or municipal district, ward, township or village, goldfield or island). The entry for each housholder records locality (name of street, road, gully etc., in town, the number of the house), name of the householder, number of persons in each schedule, total number of persons in each schedule (male and female), number of Chinese of Aborigines included (male and female), and remarks.

The 1891 Census was the first to survive after that taken in 1841. Records of the intervening censuses are believed to have been destroyed in the Garden Palace fire on 22 September 1882.
