The collection contains Oldaker's letters to his parents and a close friend Harry Isaacs; typescripts of "Max Oldaker: last of the matinee idols" by Charles Osborne, miscellaneous typescripts by Oldaker, newspaper cuttings, photographs, contracts with various companies; photocopies, music scores, pamphlets and copies of 3 annotated monographs owned by Oldaker, one of which contains letters and telegrams from Noel Coward. Other correspondents include: Edward Branscombe, Frank Tait, John Meyer, David Kendall, Ivor Novello, Leontine Sagan, Noel Coward and Barry Humphries.

Born in Tasmania, after study and work in Australia Oldaker went to Great Britain and joined the DOyley Carte company in 1932. In 1939 he returned to Australia to work for J C Williamson and became a star and matinee idol, as singer and actor. He composed works for piano. From 1948-1959 Oldaker worked in both Australia and Great Britain. He returned to Tasmania in 1959 working in radio and television, teaching and acting, producing and theatre reviewing.
