Estelle Bertossi, a social and political activist and friend of John Manifold and The Bandicoots (Musical group) recalls her early years at Cherbourg, a government-run Aboriginal settlement established at Barambah in south east Queensland; her education at Dunwich, Qld and later move to North Arm, Qld.; her early working life in Brisbane and introduction to the Communist Party through Kath Walker (now known as Oodgeroo Noonuccal); her experiences with Aboriginal issues throughout the 1960s in Queensland, including the injustices of Queensland's Aboriginal's Preservation and Protection Act (1939); her interest in preseving traditional Aboriginal songs, music and dance; her involvement in left-wing movements in Brisbane; her friendship with John and Kate Manifold and The Bandicoots, a Wynnum-based group of folk musicians; music evenings of Australian bush songs and music at the Manifold's home, considered to be the centre of folk revival in Brisbane.
