- "This work is known as "Gould's supressed plates." In 1838, after the publication was in the second part, Gould went to Australia. He stopped the publication and promised subscribers to provide new parts on his return, when these two parts would be cancelled. This was done and these cancelled parts are rare, the subscribers adopting Gould's suggesion and not binding these two with the later ones. Upon Gould's return from Australia, he began his folio 'Birds of Australia' again and published it regularly every three months until the last four numbers, 1840-1848. It covered seven volumes. A 'Supplement' appeared in five parts over an interval of eighteen years, 1851-69. See 'Bibliography of the birds of Australia.' by G. M. Mathews, p. 48" --Ferguson

Mathews, and are stamped thoughout with the mark of French naturalist, Geoffroy Saint-Helaire.
