Dr John Smith Purdy (b. 1872) was an officer in the Egyptian Quarantine Service for 2 years before spending 2 years in the New Zealand Government Health Department. He was then City Health Officer and Permanent Head of the Health Department of Tasmania until in 1913 whenhe was appointed Chief City Health Officer for Sydney. He also served in South Africa as Surgeon Captain 6th and 10th New Zealand contingents
