- Biography/History:
-
Writer. Mary Eliza Fullerton was born at Glenmaggie, Victoria, in 1868 and was educated at home by her mother and at the local state school. She became involved in the women's suffrage movement of the late 1890s and early 1900s, and published articles on feminist issues. She also joined the Women's Organizing Committee of the Political Labor Council of Victoria and, during World War I, wrote articles on the case against conscription. She also wrote stories, novels and verse, sometimes under pseudonyms or anonymously. Her books include the novels The people of the timber belt (1923) and A juno of the bush (1930), and a study in natural history titled The Australian bush (1928). In 1922 Fullerton travelled to England where she met and befriended Miles Franklin who arranged the publication of Fullerton's verse. Fullerton died in Sussex in 1946.
