The Caledonian Society of Victoria was founded in April 1858, largely on the initiative of Thomas McCombie, a Melbourne politician and journalist. It was reconstituted in 1884, the first President being the politician and businessman Sir James MacBrian. The Society's name was later changed to the Royal Caledonian Society of Melbourne
