Contains: Diary of Wills' journey to Australia, letters to members of his family describing his journey, the Australian countryside, his life as a shepherd on a station near Deniliquin, his work at the observatory on Flagstaff Hill, Melbourne, his life in Melbourne, and his expedition to central and northern Australia, 1860-1861.The reels also contain cuttings from Melbourne and London newspapers concerning the expedition, death and funeral of Burke and Wills, and two letters to Wills' father dated 1839 and 1840.

Wills emigrated to Australia in 1852. In 1860 he was given the position of astronomer and surveyor with an expedition led by Robert O'Hara Burke to explore Central Australia. With Burke and 2 others he reached the Gulf of Carpentaria on 12 February,1861 having left Melbourne on 20 August, 1860. They struggled back to the Cooper's Creek depot to find it deserted and then in an effort to reach Adelaide Burke and Wills died of malnutrition about the end of June 1861.
