- Summary:
-
Two letters to Freda Dudley-Ward, both to accompany instalments of Lord Mountbatten's "Diary of the Tour" (of Australia) and enjoining Freda to be discreet with her copies. The second letter includes the names of other trusted recipients. The diaries were subsequently published as 'The Diaries of Lord Louis Mountbatten'. The diary was intended initially as a private account by Louis Mountbatten of the Prince of Wales' Royal Tour of New Zealand and Australia in 1920. The Prince of Wales was Lord Mountbatten's cousin. The first letter dated 1st July 1920 describes The Prince of Wales' low spirits on reaching the "second quarter of his life". Earl Mountbatten writes of the strenuous tours of Sydney and Melbourne, and describes their sea voyage from Sydney to Albany in The Renown, including details of their cabins.
