The collection comprises three parts : Typescript draft of 'Flying start : the history of the first five decades of civil aviation in Australia'; Copy of the unpublished work 'Cecil Arthur Butler : the autobiography of an Australian aviation pioneer'. Taken directly from the original typed version by Butler provided by Mrs Doris Butler, this document was prepared by the Civil Aviation Authority in 1991; Butler Air Transport Company air route map Sydney-Mendooran-Bourke'. The map is signed C.A. Butler and dated 28 March 1939; A brown print copy (reverse image) of the map.
- Biography/History:

Aviator. Butler was born at Shirley, N.S.W., in 1902, and was educated at Lithgow High School and the Sydney Technical College. He was engaged in the construction of aircraft at the Australian Aircraft and Engineering Company at Mascot, and was an engineer with the Australian Aerial Services at Hay from 1923 to 1928. In 1931 he made a record solo flight from England to Australia, and was the pilot of the inaugural flight of the first section of the Australia-U.K. air-mail service in 1934. In the early years of aviation he worked with the Civil Aviation Branch on many occasions, and later helped the Department of Civil Aviation with the survey of rural air routes and the establishment of country aerodromes.
