- Description:
-
- Hobart Town : Printed by Andrew Bent, [1819]
- 36 pages ; 19 cm.
- Notes:
-
- Published anonymously. Preface dated December 1818; publication on 15 March 1819 anounced in the Hobart Town Gazette on 13 March 1819.
- In 1926 Angus and Robertson printed a version of this work based on a contemporaneous manuscript in the hand of Thomas Wells, and attributed the authorship to him. In 1959 'The Dixon Library and Galleries : a brief guide' expressed doubt as to whether Wells was the author, "or merely the amanuensis". As Andrew Bent clearly states in his 1829 Tasmanian Almanac (p. 93) that he, Mr. A. Bent "compiled, printed, and published" the pamphlet, the attribution to Wells would appear to be erroneous. See Sally Bloomfield, "Spruiking Van Diemen's Land: The Long Reach of a Little Bushranger Book," Script & Print, vol. 42, no. 1 (2018), 26-47.
- "The first unofficial book or pamphlet printed in Tasmania. ... The statement ... that it is the first pamphlet or book printed in ... Australasia is seriously in error. ... It may, however, be fairly described as the first work of general literature printed in Australasia."--Ferguson.
- National Library of Australia's copy (accessioned 9 August 1945) was fully bound by and stamped W. Pratt (probably William Pratt of Pimlico, died 1885) in red leather with 5 raised bands, gilt printing and decorations and marbled endpapers.
