Packham is a Ngarrindjeri man. His mother was removed as a baby to Colebrook Home, Eden Hills, S. Aust. He speaks about the effects of removal on the children of removed parents through his own personal experience, his mother's relationships, and his own substance abuse. Packham married at age 21 and had six children, four of whom are in his care. He discovered his Aboriginal spirituality, after attending Alcoholics Anonymous where he found new purpose in life.
