Reverend Sir Irving Benson was born in Hull and died in Melbourne. He was ordained as a Methodist minister and was Superintendent of the Central Methodist Mission from 1933-1967. In 1939 the Toronto University conferred on him a Doctorate of Divinity. He was Bevan Lecturer in 1933 and Drew (U.S.A.) Lecturer in 1944. He was known as a liberal theologian who was keenly interested in social welfare. He was also an enthusiastic bibliophile. His publications include The man with the donkey, A century of Victorian Methodism, The craft of prayer, The craft of finding God. In 1963 he became the first Methodist minister to be knighted in Australia.
