The records in MS 5908 extend back to the formation of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust in 1954. Most of the Trust's early records have not survived however, and the bulk of the records in the collection date from the period 1965-1985. They include correspondence, minutes, financial records, subject files, press cuttings, scripts, scores, programs, publicity material, photographs and tape recordings.

The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust was founded in 1954 to foster the performing arts. The Australian Opera, Australian Ballet and the Marionette Theatre of Australia were established by the Trust. It also helped establish six regional drama companies. It acts as entrepreneur for overseas artists and companies touring Australia, and provides administrative assistance to many artistic associations and conferences. The Trust published a quarterly theatre magazine, The Elizabethan Trust news.
