Granville Stapylton was appointed an assistant Surveyor in N.S.W. in 1828. He carried out a number of difficult surveys near Sydney. In 1831 he was with a party which traced the Abercrombie River from Bathurst towards the Lake George area. In 1836 Stapylton was appointed second-in-command of Surveyor-general T. L. Mitchell's overland expedition to Australia Felix. He was critical of Mitchell, who frequently left him in charge of the base camp. Stapylton travelled to Melbourne overland in 1838 to work under the direction of Robert Hoddle. He was later sent to work at Moreton Bay and was surveying the coast south from Brisbane on 31 May 1840 when Aborigines attacked camp killing Stapylon and an assistant.
