Alan Howell born in London and educated in the United Kingdom (UK) talks about attending the Hornsey College of Art; working as a designer for seven years for BiBA; obtaining a scholarship to attend the Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts; his work as a conservator for the Geological Society of London; his career in the UK; design work; teaching a variety of subjects at different institutions; his involvement with the Institute of Paper Conservation (IPC); organizing the 1986 International Conference held in Oxford; moving to Australia in 1987; heading the Preservation Section at the State Library of N.S.W for 10 years; his move to Manager, Collection Preservation and Access Division at the State Library of Victoria in 1998.
Howell talks about conservation and preservation; the differences between these activities in libraries, archives, galleries and museums; on changes and growth in the conservation profession; of differences between working in Australia and overseas; of training programs; the difficulties he has experienced with AICCM; the need to have a replacement for the National Preservation Office; his plans for the future.
