- Library's Whelan copy is the 1913 reprint; signed and inscribed by the author in ink, "This book is an expansion of a series of articles written for the "Sydney Morning Herald" after two short journeys into the west of New South Wales & one to the station of Sir Charles Mackellar near Quirindi, in the Namoi district ... as I walked along Pitt St. to dinner, it occured to me that the industry could be explained in either of two ways - (1) by describing the processes or (2) by describing the lives & problems of the men who took part in it, & that the second method might give it an intense interest. All that I learnt in those journeys about wool went into this book. What I learnt about other things - into "The Dreadnought of the Darling". C.E.W. Bean 29/5/1940"
