MS 8974 comprises transcripts of diaries kept by Sarah Chinnery in New Guinea, 1921, 1928-1929 and 1932-1937. Descriptions include arrival in New Guinea in 1921, daily life, a visit from Margaret Mead, photographic travels, and the eruption at Rabaul in 1937 (1 box).
The Acc03.145 instalment comprises Sarah Chinnery's manuscript diaries and typewritten narratives. They form the basis of the transcripts held at MS 8974. Accompanied by notes and index provided by Sarah's daughter, Sheila Waters (1 small carton).
- Biography/History:

Photographer. Sarah Johnston Chinnery (née Neill) was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1887 and moved to England in 1900. She married anthropologist E.W.P. Chinnery in 1919, and accompanied him to Port Moresby in 1921 and then on to Rabaul from 1924 to 1937. Sarah was a keen photographer who recorded her observations and travels in England, New Guinea and Australia. Following the volcanic eruptions at Rabaul in 1937, Sarah and the family moved to Melbourne where she remained until her death in 1970.
